BJ’s Wholesale Club, a Massachusetts-based warehouse retailer, is set to make a major entrance into North Texas with plans to open at least four new locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area — its first in the state. The company’s expansion in the region was hinted at last fall through public votes in Forney, but new state filings have revealed more details about the scope and timeline of the venture.
Along with the Forney location, which lies east of Dallas, BJ’s plans to open stores in Fort Worth, Waxahachie, and Grand Prairie. Each location will span approximately 107,000 square feet. Known for offering a wide range of products, including groceries, electronics, and home goods, BJ’s is a competitor to Costco.
The estimated cost to build each store is $9.5 million, according to the filings, though the information is preliminary and subject to change.
The Fort Worth location will be situated at 5901 Altamesa Blvd., near Chisholm Trail Parkway. Construction is projected to start in June and finish by February 2026. This area has become a major hub for homebuilding and retail on the west side of the Metroplex, with one developer proposing a large 145-acre retail center that may include a grocery store.
The Waxahachie location will be located at Highway 77 and Hedgewood Drive, with construction set to begin in June and finish by January 2026.
In Grand Prairie, BJ’s plans to open a store at the southwest corner of Robinson and Mayfield Road, with an estimated completion date of January 2026.
The Forney location will be at U.S. Route 80 and Gateway Boulevard, within the Villages at Gateway development, which will also house a Target and an H-E-B. It is expected to open in January 2026.
BJ’s had previously considered a site in Allen, at the corner of Alma Drive and State Highway 121, but the Allen Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-1 against changing regulations within the area’s planned development district in December.
Currently, BJ’s operates more than 215 clubs in 16 states and employs over 25,000 people nationwide. For the fiscal year 2023, which ended in February 2024, the company reported net sales of $19.5 billion, a 3% increase from $18.1 billion the previous year.
