DALLAS — Authorities in Dallas are investigating a tragic accident that claimed the life of a 23-year-old Southern Methodist University (SMU) graduate, Katie Kerl, while she was walking to a rideshare vehicle.

Katie, originally from Florida, chose to remain in Dallas after graduating in 2023, having developed a deep love for the city.

Last Thursday evening, a night out with a friend ended in heartbreak for Katie’s family when they received the devastating news of her death.

The incident occurred just before 10 p.m. near the Rosewood Mansion Hotel at Gillespie Street and Turtle Creek Boulevard. According to investigators, Katie and her friend were walking toward their parked rideshare vehicle when a driver circumvented the parked car and struck both women.

Katie’s friend sustained injuries but survived. Tragically, Katie was pinned under the vehicle in the valet area and died on impact.

“I was on the phone with the police, and they told me Katie was getting into an Uber when it happened,” said Katie’s sister, Abbey Kerl. “Katie wasn’t doing anything wrong. She was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

A Sister’s Tribute

Abbey described Katie as her role model and best friend. “She was the most incredible person I’ve ever known,” Abbey said. “She had such a presence—truly unforgettable.”

Katie’s family remains in Florida, while she had been establishing her life in Dallas following her graduation.

“I just want justice,” Abbey shared. “I want the person responsible to face accountability. They left me, a 19-year-old, without my sister.”

A Neighborhood’s Concerns

David Pemberton, a resident who lives near the Rosewood Mansion Hotel, recounted the chaos that unfolded that night.

“It was loud, and you could tell something terrible had happened,” Pemberton said. “This area can be dangerous because of all the rideshare vehicles parked along the street. It narrows the roadway, and drivers speed through here. It’s nerve-wracking to even walk.”

Ongoing Investigation

Dallas police have confirmed that the driver involved remained at the scene following the incident. No charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities have not disclosed whether the driver’s blood was taken for evidence or if their phone was examined for potential distractions. The suspect’s identity will remain confidential unless charges are filed.

The timeline for further updates remains uncertain, and police have declined to answer questions about the next steps in the case.

Katie’s family and the Dallas community are left grappling with this senseless tragedy, as they await answers and seek justice for a life cut far too short.
