Plano Police Investigate Alleged Abuse of Disabled Student by Former PISD Staff Member

PLANO, Texas – The Plano Police Department has launched an active investigation following allegations that a former Plano Independent School District staff member abused a special-needs student at Plano Senior High School.

The Student and Her Condition

Eighteen-year-old Saniyah Reese lives with a rare genetic disorder known as GRIN1, which causes significant neurodevelopmental challenges. She is enrolled in special education classes tailored to her needs at Plano Senior High.

Her parents, Alvin Nelson and Lestia Nelson, say they became concerned about their daughter’s wellbeing after observing troubling changes in her behavior. Lestia, suspecting possible mistreatment, placed an audio recording device in Saniyah’s backpack. The recording, she says, captured what sounded like Saniyah screaming in distress.

Alarming Video Evidence

The family later requested access to surveillance footage from inside the classroom. According to the Nelsons, the video—recorded in January and released by the district in March—shows a disturbing scene: a teacher pulling Saniyah by the neck and bending her fingers backward. Saniyah’s cries are also reportedly audible in the footage.

“This is just what we were able to catch,” said her father, Alvin Nelson. “We don’t know what else might have happened before or after.”

“She was crying—and she doesn’t cry for nothing,” added her mother, Lestia.

Seeking Accountability

The Nelsons addressed the Plano ISD Board of Trustees during a public meeting on Tuesday, calling for transparency and systemic change.

“We want accountability, and we want action,” said Alvin Nelson. “There should be strict adherence to protocols, guidelines, and procedures that protect and educate all children, especially those with special needs.”

District and Law Enforcement Response

Plano ISD confirmed to FOX 4 that the staff member in question is no longer employed by the district and has been reported to the appropriate state authorities. However, the district did not clarify whether the individual resigned or was terminated. At this time, no criminal charges have been filed, and the educator’s identity has not been released.

The Plano Police Department has confirmed that the case remains under active investigation.
