The Fort Worth Zoo Welcomes 185-pound Baby Giraffe to Its Family

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Fort Worth Zoo recently welcomed a male reticulated giraffe to the herd.

The soon-to-be-named calf weighed 185 pounds and stands about 6 feet tall.

When fully grown, he’ll weigh up to 3,000 pounds and measure about 18 feet from head to hoof.

The Fort Worth Zoo takes care of a herd of reticulated giraffes. Reticulated is a term that describes the giraffe’s chestnut-brown rectangular markings…which are similar to human fingerprints in that each giraffe pattern is different.

Giraffes are native to the African savannas and their most distinguishing feature is its long neck, which can account for 7 feet of its height.

The baby calf and the rest of the herd will soon join several other species in the new African Savanna exhibit which is scheduled to open next year.

Patrons will enjoy several species interacting in a shared spaces and will also have the opportunity to get up close and personal and feed the “gentle giants.”
