DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – One of the most dangerous places you can take cover during a storm is under an overpass.
“It actually becomes a wind tunnel in a storm,” said Lonnie Haschel, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety. “If you have hail, there is a possibility that you have strong, damaging winds or tornadoes. That wind is funneled underneath that overpass. Any debris, or anything flying through there will increase in speed, which could cause more injury or damage to personal property.”
Drivers started lining up under overpasses in Fort Worth more than an hour before storms hit the area on Tuesday. “During inclement weather, we always encourage folks to pay attention to weather reports. Preparedness is the key. You want to try to not be on the roadway if a storm is approaching,” said Haschel.
