PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Jimmy Carter’s long public goodbye has begun in Georgia, where the 39th U.S. president’s life started more than 100 years ago. A motorcade Saturday with Carter’s flag-draped casket began at the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus and passed through his hometown of Plains and family farm. Former Secret Service agents who protected the late president served as pallbearers. The Carter family is accompanying their patriarch to start his six-day state funeral. The procession was heading to Atlanta on Saturday afternoon. Carter was also a former Georgia governor and will be honored at the state Capitol before his remains are taken to the Carter Presidential Center where he will lie in repose.
