(WBAP/KLIF) — The murder rate in two major North Texas cities heading in opposite directions. Dallas-Fort Worth has seen a dramatic drop in violent crime as Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia and Fort Worth’s Neil Noakes have implemented aggressive crime reduction plans.
However, homicides in the City of Dallas have jumped 10% over last year putting the current total at 237 as of December 19th. Meanwhile, Fort Worth Police spokesperson Tracy Carter says the Cowtown murder rate has dropped nearly 20%. He credits target based policing focusing on violent criminals as the reason for the drop. And, over the past two years Fort Worth has experienced a 33% drop in murders, largely due to the Fort Worth Safe Initiative.
Carter says his department’s focus has reduced the number of murders by 17 over last year, while the number of homicides in Dallas has jumped by 23 since last year. Fort Worth had 118 homicides in 2021, while reporting just 80 so far this year as of December 19th.
