(WBAP/KLIF) — A new war memorial is planned to memorialize North Texans left behind in Vietnam.
After realizing no memorial existed in Tarrant County to honor those who died in the Vietnam War, the county’s Historical Society is now planning the construction of a black granite monument in honor of those lost.
As Veteran’s Day approaches, Jim Hodgson with the Tarrant County Historical Society says the organization is seeking donations for its construction. The memorial will consist of a faceted granite structure with nine panels, listing the names of the fallen. Hodgson believes the over 200 families affected by the death of a loved one during the conflict is significant, and he believes more names will be added to the monument as they are found.
The project is estimated to cost between $300,000 and $500,000, and they have thus far raised $25,000. The Historical Society has engaged in several fund-raisers to generate money for the project. The City of Fort Worth has also agreed to provide space at its Veterans Memorial Park for the structure.
At least 224 Tarrant County residents sacrificed their lives in the Vietnam War from 1965 through 1972. Hodgson says those wishing to donate to the memorial’s construction can visit the Tarrant County Vietnam Memorial Foundation website or Facebook page.
