Accused State Fair of Texas Shooter Claims Self Defense

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A recently released arrest affidavit is shedding new light on the shooting at the State Fair of Texas last Saturday that left three people injured.

The accused gunman, 22-year-old Cameron Turner, is being held on a $1.5 million bond in the Dallas County Jail. He’s charged with three counts of aggravated assault-serious bodily injury, a second-degree felony.

He’s accused of opening fire in the food court in the Tower Building and wounding two men and a woman.

The gunfire caused widespread chaos, sending crowds running from the building to the exits.

According to the affidavit, two witnesses told police they saw Turner shoot inside the four court. One witness said he saw Turner shoot three to four times, and the other witness said he saw Turner shooting and saw another man fall to the ground before Turner ran from the scene.

Police said Turner, who was identified wearing an orange hoodie, was arrested by two state troopers who were working the fair as well as a Dallas police officer. Authorities retrieved a handgun from Turner.

The affidavit states Turner reportedly told police he was trying to protect his family when he was allegedly approached by a large group of males, that he went into “defense mode” and started shooting.

He told police he shot three to four times. The affidavit did not state what happened or what was said to make Turner feel threatened. It also stated one of the victims is not cooperating with police.

Dallas police and city leaders are investigating how the gun got onto the property. Only conceal carry permit holders are allowed to have firearms. The fair does have a new weapons detection system at the front gate.

The affidavit did not state whether Turner is an LTC holder.

The State Fair of Texas said it has made some subtle changes in the aftermath of the shooting. There is an increased security presence at the fair.
