(WBAP/KLIF) — Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is dealing with overcrowding at it’s main location, that’s forcing dogs to share kennels. The facility is operating at 165% capacity, as of Thursday, and as their average daily intake is nearing 60 dogs and cats.
According to DAS Assistant General Manager Sarah Sheek, the problem is causing animal stress and a potential increase in the spread of illnesses. She says this has been the most crowded she’s seen the facility in her 3 1/2 years with the shelter. Although there’s currently no supporting data, Sheek speculates that inflation and the higher housing costs may affect people’s ability to keep their pets, resulting in a spike of homeless dogs.
The shelter is currently offering free adoptions of pets that have been spayed, neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated, and come with a two-week option to return the animal for any reason.
