EPA Urging Residents to Avoid Duck Creek in the Aftermath of Sherwin-Williams Plant Fire

GARLAND (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Environmental Protection Agency is warning residents in Garland to avoid fishing in certain creeks because of contaminated runoff from the fire at the Sherwin-Williams plant on Monday.

The City of Garland said the foam retardant from the Sherwin-Williams’ suppression system entered the sewers and surrounding creeks.

Officials said while some dead fish were seen in the impacted creeks, no major impacts to public health have been identified at this time.

An EPA map shows the runoff impacts a long stretch of Duck Creek from the south end of Rick Oden park in Garland to the Duck Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant just east of Sunnyvale.

City officials, the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the EPA are still conducting air and water quality testing amid the cleanup.

If any hazards are identified, residents in the affected area will be notified immediately.
