Scam Prevention: Better Business Bureau Offers Tips on Hiring Contractors After Severe Storms

NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Better Business Bureau North Central Texas is offering tips to homeowners who suffered property damage as severe weather continues to blanket the region.

The first step is to contact your insurance company to inquire about your policy coverage and specific filing requirements.

Monica Horton is the BBB’s spokesperson for North Central Texas and advises homeowners to also be wary of door-to-door contractors offering to waive insurance deductibles.

“If someone is claiming to waive the insurance deductible without the insurance company’s consent that is illegal. There was a House bill signed several years ago that put that in motion,” she said.

While in the midst of a meeting with a contractor, Horton said it’s important not to take a contractor’s word about damage in places you can’t see.

“Some of the unscrupulous contractors may get on the roof and fabricate some damage or show you pictures of a roof that’s not even yours. Just know that those tactics are out there that’s why we want consumers to do their research before hiring anyone,” she said.

Here are some other important tips from the BBB:

  • Resist high-pressure sales: Some storm chasers use tactics such as the “good deal” you’ll get only if you hire the contractor on the spot. Be pro-active in selecting a contractor and not re-active to sales calls on the phone or door-to-door pitches. Disaster victims should never feel forced to make a hasty decision or to choose an unknown contractor.
  • Be especially careful of door-to-door contractors: Many municipalities require a solicitation permit if sales people go door-to-door. Ask for identification. Check their vehicle for a business name, phone number, and license plates for your state.
  • Don’t sign over insurance checks to contractors: Get an invoice from the contractor and pay them directly (preferably with a credit card, which offers additional fraud protection over other forms of payment). Don’t sign any documents that give the contractor any rights to your insurance claims. If you have questions, contact your insurance company or agent.

Anyone who feels scammed can file a complaint with the BBB.
