Apartment Worker Killed When Mistaken for Burglar

(WBAP/KLIF) — A Christmas Eve shooting in turns tragic for a hard-working husband on his anniversary.

One tenant heard noise on his balcony on December 24th, grabbed a gun, and shot a man who he thought was burglarizing his Grand Prairie apartment. Police say 53-year-old Cesar Montelongo, Jr., was checking several balconies at Clayton Point Apartments at around 6:00 pm on December 24th, looking for freezing and busted water lines after several pipes had ruptured.

Grand Prairie Police responded to several reports of gunfire and found the 53-year-old maintenance worker suffering from a gunshot wound on the balcony. Montelongo was transported to a local hospital, where he later died of his injuries. The unidentified resident remained at the scene and cooperated with police. at present, no arrests have been made in the tragedy.

In a phone call to our media partner WFAA, Cesar Montelongo, Jr., said that his father was headed to celebrate his 29th Anniversary after work, but never made the date with his wife, Candalaria. His son also says the family is relying on faith to get through the difficult ordeal. Grand Prairie police have made no arrests in the case, as the investigation continues.
