Jurors Reach Guilty Verdict on 2 Counts in Deep Ellum Assault Trial

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A Dallas County jury on Monday found a man seen in a viral video beating a woman guilty of misdemeanor assault and third-degree felony obstruction.

Austin Shuffield was on trial for the 2019 fight in Deep Ellum that started when he banged on the victim, L’Daijohnique Lee’s car window in anger because she drove the wrong way down Elm Street and parked in a position that blocked him from leaving.

Video shows Shuffield knocking a phone out of Lee’s hand before she punched him. Shuffield responded by punching Lee numerous times.

The video also showed Shuffield pulling out a gun during the violent encounter.

Lee told jurors that she thought Shuffield was going to beat her to death. Although Shuffield did not testify, he told detectives during that she threatened him with violence.

As part of a plea deal, Shuffield will serve four days in custody for assault as well as plead guilty and serve a 90-day sentence on a DWI charge in Collin County.

He’ll also spend five years on probation.

It took the jury about eight hours over two days of deliberations to reach a unanimous decision.

They found Shuffield not guilty on an aggravated assault charge, despite the fact that he held a gun during the fight.

In 2019, Lee was charged by police with criminal mischief for smashing windows on Shuffield’s truck after the assault but the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office later dropped that charge.
