National Flower of Ukraine Inspires Generosity

The sunflower is inspiring local help for Ukraine.

The sunflower is the national flower of Ukraine and has become a symbol of the country’s resilience since Russia invaded in February. It’s also being used as a way to boost humanitarian relief. Plano Mayor John Muns helped sell sunflowers out of a booth at the Galleria on Thursday, with proceeds going to UNICEF.

“I’m here to ask people to buy sunflowers and donate some of the proceeds for Ukrainian help,” said Muns. “The beauty is they found some real opportunities to help Ukraine in a real material way. They’ve done a great job of coming up with some really good ideas.”

On Saturday, the artists of Plano Art Association and Richardson Civic Art Society are hosting a special art exhibit and action on Saturday, April 16 in the Plano Arts District in downtown Plano. The public is invited to purchase original artwork by more than 60 local artists. Each piece will each feature a sunflower-themed subject.

The event will be held at event1013 10:30am to 8:00pm on Saturday, April 16.

One hundred percent of all winning bid donations will be forwarded to an established and vetted Ukrainian charity, Sunflower of Peace.

“As concerned artists, we all feel a need to do what we can to help the people of Ukraine. By creating this special tribute artwork we hope we can make a meaningful contribution to the cause. We really encourage folks in the area to come see this beautiful sunflower artwork and make generous donation bids.” said Gene Dillard, president of Plano Art Association.

A silent auction with a “buy-now” option will occur throughout the day. A live auction at 5:00 pm will feature selected artworks. Plano Symphony Orchestra members will perform during the afternoon. Downtown merchants and sponsors will display Ukrainian flags throughout the day.

Unsold artwork will be available for purchase online for two weeks following the event.
