Kristin Thrower: 9/4/15 Liberty, Justice and a 3-Day Weekend for All

OK, maybe not for all.Kristin Thrower: 7/21/15 Are 24 hours enough in a day?

This holiday, Labor Day, which marks the unofficial “end of summer,” has its mix of feelings depending on who you ask.  For some, all they see is a 3-day weekend and they are looking forward to every second of it.  Still for others, there is no weekend.  It is 3 days of normal work hours.  Retail employees, restaurant workers, medical personnel, and of course, news people are among those who must ‘labor’ this weekend.  We see a different definition to Labor Day. One that makes it no different than any other day.  The sales quotas must be met, people need to be served, money needs to be made and corporate offices must be satisfied. The news doesn’t stop on Labor Day.

According to the Department of Labor’s website, “Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

So, I don’t complain because this makes it sound like we should ALL be working that day.

But hold your fire!

What I absolutely LOVE about being an American is our labor force.  We are dedicated workers and we have the freedom to work wherever we see will give us the most happiness.  We have the freedom to choose wherever we want to raise our families and the opportunities to build a life from wherever we land.  Hard work is the same anywhere it’s accomplished.  Then free time is the reward that comes from a hard day’s work.

To all my fellow laborers out there in these great states, if you are one of those who have a 3-day weekend coming up, CHEERS to you.  But please, if you happen across one of the laborers working on Labor Day, be extra kind.  For they are also in pursuit of their own happiness.

 Happy Labor Day to All!
