AUSTIN (WBAP/KLIF) – A Texas Army National Guard Soldier assigned to Operation Lone Star died in a non-mission related incident on Monday, according to the Texas Military Department.
The Soldier was shot in Brackettville, Texas and pronounced dead at the scene. Initial findings indicate the Soldier died from an accidental firearm discharge.
“We are deeply saddened by this loss,” said Maj. Gen. Tracy Norris, Adjutant General for Texas Military Department. “We are focused on supporting the Soldier’s family and are providing all available resources.”
The cause of death is under investigation.
Operation Lone Star was initiated by Governor Greg Abbott. It surged state law enforcement to the border to address an uptick in illegal crossings.
“Our hearts are heavy at the news of the tragic death of a Texas Guardsman stationed at the border as part of Operation Lone Star,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “We grieve for the soldier who died and lift their family and loved ones up in prayer.”
The Texas Rangers will conduct an investigation into the tragedy.
The Army Times reports that the killing was the sixth death linked to Operation Lone Star, including four suicides.
