McKinney City Council Replaces Shemwell, Appoints District 1 Representative

MCKINNEY (WBAP/KLIF) – The vacant City Council seat in McKinney was filled by a unanimous decision Tuesday night.

The McKinney City Council appointed Pastor Christopher “Chris” Thornton to fill the District 1 seat left vacant after the recall vote of La’Shadion Shemwell in November. The recall election came after Shemwell was labeled a distraction by city leaders.

Thornton is a lifelong McKinney resident. He is the Associate Pastor at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church in McKinney and the Pastor of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church in Colbert, Oklahoma. He and his wife Mona have been married 26 years and have four children and two grandchildren.

“I’m a product of McKinney, born and raised on the east side,” Thornton said Tuesday night. “I’m a black man and I stand for that, but I’m also a fair man. I look at it from every aspect that I’m supposed to.”

Thornton will hold the position until the next City Council election in May.
