National Weather Service Confirms 9 Tornadoes Touched Down in DFW Sunday

A tornado that touched down in northern Dallas left more than 100,000 without power, as the severe storm system lashes parts of the Great Plains.

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF)- The National Weather Service confirms 9 tornadoes touched down in the DFW Metroplex Sunday Night.

Ted Ryan with NWS says the big one in north Dallas was an EF-3, east of that there was an ef-2 confirmed in the Garland area, ef-1 in Rockwall, an ef-1 in Midlothian and ef-0 in Ferris. Also,  And two EF-0s in Kaufman County

“Anytime you have a significant tornado like an EF-2 OR EF-3 like we did especially on the ground for as long as it was, that’s a pretty significant event,” Ryan said.

He said this did not break any records but says its unusual for the one in North Dallas to stay on the ground for as long as it did.

Ryan said the record for tornadoes in the entire North Texas region is 15 on October 13th 1981 and just in Dallas County, the record is 4 tornadoes in 1994.

Ryan reminds everyone to be vigilant and to always be prepared if another tornado hits. He said October is still a popular month for tornadoes. “Even if you weren’t impacted this time around it’s a good idea to be prepared what to do and where to go if another hits,” he said.
