Fort Worth Bomb Squad K-9 Officially Retires

FORT WORTH (WBAP/KLIF) – A beloved member of the Fort Worth bomb squad officially retired Wednesday.
Quigley, a black labrador retriever, has been a part of the K9 Explosive Unit since 2011. Fort Worth Fire Chief James Davis said the unit is extremely beneficial to the department.

“They’re out in the community and sweeping areas where people congregate,” said Davis.

K9 Quigley has worked several high profile events such as the Super Bowl, TMS, Rally’s and Conventions. He retires at the age of 10.

“Now he can just be a normal dog,” said his handler, Mike Ikerd. “He still comes to work with me but won’t go out on calls.”

Quigley’s spot in the unit will be filled by 3-year-old Barkevious, who lives and has been trained by the veteran Quigley.

The City of Fort Worth gave Quigley a specially baked cake from a local dog bakery to celebrate his retirement.
