Plano First Responders Honor Students, Staff as Heroes

PLANO (WBAP/KLIF) – Plano Fire-Rescue and Medical City Plano recognized four people for their quick response that saved the life of a woman whose heart stopped last month.

Doctors said Wednesday that Julie Coon, a volunteer at Plano Senior High School, collapsed and stopped breathing on October 11. It was later determined she suffered cardiac arrest. Two coaches started CPR and twin sisters Christy and Riley Winkler, both 15-years-old, ran inside the school to retrieve an Automated External Difibrillator (AED).

“Being able to apply that machine and listen to the instructions, which is really hard to do in the moment,” explained Plano-Fire-Rescue Medical Director Mark Gamber. “I’m convinced that’s why Mrs. Coon is here with us today.”

Coon said Wednesday that she is thankful for the quick thinking of all involved and believes she wasn’t meant to leave this Earth that day.
