Dallas City Council Votes to Remove Robert E. Lee Statue in Lee Park

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News) – The Dallas City Council voted on Wednesday to remove the statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee in Lee Park.

The resolution passed with a 13-1 vote. Councilwoman Sandy Greyson was the only council member to vote against the measure.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said he made up his mind about the future of the statue after the incident in Charlottesville last month, when 32-year-old Heather Heyer was killed while protesting a white supremacy rally.

“When I saw those hundreds of white men with torches parading around and what happened in the day following, I realized that something as innocuous as a piece of stone could be turned into a thing that bad people worship and I didn’t want to have any part of it,” he said.

Once the statue is removed, it will be placed in storage until a task force decides what to do with it.
