New Laws Take Effect

Undated (WBAP/KLIF) – A number of new laws took effect in Texas on September 1. On the top of the list: a complete ban on texting while driving. The new state law does not address talking on cellphones while driving, which means any legal limitations that already exist in Texas’ cities remain in effect in those cities.

As of Friday public schools may no longer engage in so-called “lunch shaming,” or the issuance of special lunches to children whose parents have fallen behind in their school lunch account balances.

From now on attacking a police officer or a judge in the state of Texas is a hate crime.

Another new law gives child welfare service providers the right to refuse care to children and parents if that care violates the providers’ sincerely held religious beliefs.

Gun licenses are $100 cheaper now than they were August 31.

And, the open carrying of swords, sabers, machetes, spears and large knives is now legal in almost all public places
