The City of Richardson issued a boil water notice for customers located in the southwest portion.

In a Wednesday news release, officials blamed the issue on an equipment malfunction that caused a part of the city’s 767 water zone to experience a drop in pressure.

That issue was not detected due to a malfunction of telemetry equipment that failed to notify operators and the water pressure fell to zero.

Officials said that only lasted five minutes before the issue was caught and the pumps were restarted. The situation prompted the Texas Environmental Quality to require the city to issue the boil water notice.

The affected area is bordered by West Arapaho Road, Coit, West Spring Valley and Central Expressway.

Richardson City Manager Don Magner said the notice will be in effect until they an randomly sample water at several locations in their service area. He said the notice may be rescinded by Friday morning.

The issue led to the closure of Arapaho Classical Magnet, Dover Elementary, Heights Elementary, Richardson West Junior High and Richardson High School.

The city will be passing out free bottled water at Richardson’s water distribution center at Heights Recreation Center at 711 West Arapaho Road from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
