DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – A North Texas singer is recovering after being shot by a woman while she was signing autographs on stage at Black Academy of Arts and Letters concert Saturday night.
Dallas police said the suspect, 26-year-old Micah Williams, was suffering from a mental health episode when she shot Jada Thomas.
Investigators said officers responded to a shooting call near the academy just before 6 p.m. and found Thomas suffering from a gunshot wound.
Williams had already left the location but was arrested close by and the handgun was recovered, according to police.
Academy director Curtis King told our media partner WFAA TV they’re not letting this terrifying incident stop their mission.
“I am not saying we should not be cognizant of hatred and people like that but we can not walk in our life continuing to live in fear because that’s not the type of person Jada Thomas is,” he said.
Thomas is recovering in stable condition and Williams is in custody on an aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge. She’s in Dallas County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
The investigation is ongoing but it’s not yet clear if the Thomas knew Williams and police have not revealed a motive.
In a social media post, King said the academy is considering ways to shore up security, including buying metal detectors and reducing the number of entry points into the building.
“As we continue forward, our mission to enrich the community through the arts remains unwavering,” wrote King. “We extend our gratitude to all who stand with us during this time, and we assure you of our steadfast commitment to safety and excellence.”
