The Gap Widens Between Cruz and Allred

According to a recent survey from the Fort-Worth Star Telegram, data shows Republican incumbent Ted Cruz leading his Democratic opponent by 8 points in the race for a U.S. Senate seat in Texas. Cruz is competing against U.S. Rep. Colin Allred, a Democrat from Dallas, in the upcoming November 5 election. While a previous poll indicated a close race with only 2 percentage points separating the candidates, the latest poll released Friday by The University of Texas at Austin’s Texas Politics Project reveals a more substantial gap.

According to the poll, Cruz garnered 44% of voter support compared to Allred’s 36%. The survey, conducted between August 23-31, included 1,200 registered Texas voters and has a margin of error of 2.83%. Additionally, 2% of voters expressed support for Libertarian candidate Ted Brown, while 4% said they would vote for another candidate. Fourteen percent of respondents hadn’t given the race enough thought to form an opinion.

The poll suggests Allred has been gradually closing the gap with Cruz over time. Previous surveys from The Texas Politics Project showed Allred trailing by wider margins: 16 points in December, 14 points in February, 13 points in April, and 11 points in June. This latest poll indicates the closest margin yet, though Cruz still maintains a significant lead.
