May 28 Primary Runoff Election Results In

NORTH TEXAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Despite severe weather sweeping across North Texas Tuesday morning, voters made their voices heard at the ballot box for the May 28 primary runoff elections.

Due to widespread power outages, some of the polling locations remained open a little longer than the standard 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. timeframe.

Polls remained open in Dallas County until 9 p.m. and Kaufman County polling sites closed at 8 p.m.

These races determined each parties’ candidates for the November 5 general election in cases where no candidate received more than 50% of the vote.

There were several key races being watched including the Dallas County Sheriff seat, Texas House Speakership and the race to fill longtime Congresswoman Kay Granger’s seat in Tarrant County.

Dallas County Sheriff Marian Brown beat former Sheriff Lupe Valdez. Brown received 68% of the vote, clearing the way for the incumbent to win another term.

In Collin County, Democrat Dale Frey beat Michal Braxton for the State Senator District 30 seat.

Republican Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan overcame fierce headwinds from his own party to win his runoff race. He narrowly knocked off David Covey in his southeast Texas House District.

In a statement, Phelan wrote “We set our own course-our community is not for sale, and our values are not up for auction.”

Former Trump Campaign Spokeswoman Katrina Pierson won her runoff race for Texas House District 33 in Rockwall, knocking out Republican Incumbent Justin Holland.

Holland has represented the district since 2017 but faced backlash for voting against Governor Greg Abbott’s push for school vouchers during the last legislative session.

Abbott has been a vocal supporter amid Pierson’s campaign. she says she plans to push for education savings accounts in the next legislative session.

Pierson has no Democratic opposition ahead of the November election, so she is the presumptive winner.

Republican Craig Goldman beat John O’Shea in a closely watched race for the 12th Congressional District of Texas, the seat became available after longtime Representative Kay Granger announced her retirement.

Democrat Carlos Walker beat Diane Symons in the race for Texas House of Representatives District 97. On the Republican aspect of this race, John McQueeney beat Cheryl Bean.

They’re vying to replace state Representative Craig Goldman.

Republican David Lowe beat Stephanie Klick for Texas House of Representatives District 91.

Closer to home, Democrat Roderick Miles Junior handedly beat Kathleen Hicks for Tarrant County Commissioner Precinct 1.

In-person early voting for the November election begins October 21 and ends November 1.
