Captain David Harris, the first Black commercial pilot for a major airline, has died.

Fort Worth, TX – (WBAP/KLIF) – David Harris, the first Black pilot to fly a commercial plane for a major airline and the first Black man to achieve the rank of Captain for any major U.S. commercial airline, has died at age 89.

American Airlines CEO Robert Isom said in a statement. “Capt. Harris opened the doors and inspired countless Black pilots to pursue their dreams to fly. We will honor his legacy by ensuring we continue to create access and opportunities for careers in aviation for those who otherwise might not know it’s possible”.

The trailblazer in aviation was hired by Fort Worth-based American Airlines in 1964. He worked for American for more than 30 years, retiring in 1994.

Captain Harris was a founding member of the Organization of Black Airline Pilots, which eventually became the Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals.
