1 Dead in Denton Apartment Fire, More Than 20 Residents Displaced

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF) – The Denton Fire Department is still investigating the cause of a deadly blaze that displaced more than 20 residents early Sunday morning.

Crews were called to the Ridgecrest Apartments on Dallas Drive just west of Highway 77 just before 2:00 a.m.

When they arrived on the scene, flames were shooting from the structure’s roof and several people were trapped on the upper floor of the two-story building.

Denton Fire said crews immediately went to work on attacking the blaze and victim removal. One person was rescued from a second-story unit.

During the search for other victims, crews found the body of an elderly man. One person was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition.

Firefighters had the situation under control about 45 minutes after they arrived.

Denton Fire said the blaze started in the unit where the elderly victim was found.

The Denton Fire Department Marshal’s Office ruled the fire as Undetermined due to the number of possible heat sources and a large volume of contents in the unit.

Eight units in the building were heavily damaged. The Red Cross is helping the displaced victims.
