American Airlines Flight Attendants Poised to Strike

(WBAP/KLIF) — An airline strike could be looming during the busiest travel season of the year.

APFA President Julie Hedrick leads a potential strike picket at DFW Airport on behalf of American Airlines flight attendants. August 2023.

After working for nine years without a raise, American Airlines flight attendants are threatening to strike after contract negotiations have broken down. The Association of Professional Flight Attendants’ Paul Hartshorn, Jr., says unless airline representatives submit a contract proposal by November 17th, union members plan to walk off the job.

In August, American finalized a new contract with its pilots union in efforts to avoid a strike, however talks with the APFA have stalled because the nation’s largest airline has not offered any proposals following the latest counter-proposal by the APFA in September. The deadline for the company to bring a proposal to the table is November 17th, or following approval by the National Mediation Board and a mandatory 30-day waiting period, flight attendants say they will strike, which likely could occur during the Christmas holiday travel season.

Hartshorn says flight attendants are still working for wages set in 2014. Meanwhile, American Airlines issued a statement to WBAP/KLIF News indicating optimism in reaching a deal, saying “We continue to meet regularly with APFA and are confident that we’ll reach an agreement American’s flight attendants have earned”.
