DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson spent time with a Republican Presidential candidate on Tuesday in Dallas.
Mayor Johnson had lunch with Republican Senator Tim Scott at Mi Cocina and took a walk through Klyde Warren Park. The Republican Presidential candidate applauded Johnson for the city’s reduced crime and his recent switch to the GOP.
“He joined the Republican party because he felt like he was no longer welcome where he was,” said Senator Scott. “Because he felt like there was a better path forward.”
Mayor Johnson has remained quiet on the party switch since making the announcement last month. He didn’t answer questions from reporters after his lunch with Scott. The Mayor’s initial announcement on his switch from the Democratic to Republican party came in a Wall Street Journal Op-Ed.
The Office of the Mayor is a non-partisan position. Critics allege that Johnson, who had been a Democrat, waited until after the most recent election to announce the move.
