(WBAP/KLIF News ) – The classmates of a murdered Texas Christian University student are creating a memorial scholarship in honor of his memory.

21-year-old Wes Smith was fatally shot outside a bar in the popular West 7th entertainment district in Fort Worth in the early morning hours of September 1, in what police say was a random act of violence by suspect, 21-year-old Matthew Purdy.

Friends and family said Wes tried to make a positive impact on those around him.

According to a GoFundMe fundraiser, the Neeley School of Business student was on the TCU football team in 2021, led weekly Bible studies for the Young Life and Reformed University Fellowship and was a volunteer coach for the All Saints’ Episcopal School middle school football team.

The fundraiser promises to use all donations to offer financial support for TCU students in need.

Organizers are also giving out “Win for Wes” bracelets to honor their friend and support the scholarship.
