Abbott Signs Save Women’s Sport Act

DENTON (WBAP/KLIF) – Governor Greg Abbott has signed into law the “Save Women’s Sports Act” which requires athletes in the state to compete based on their gender at birth.

During the ceremonial bill signing, at The Women’s Hall of Fame in Denton, Abbott was joined by Riley Gaines who competed against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas in 2022. Gaines says she and Thomas tied in the 200 yard freestyle, but she wasn’t given a trophy because the NCAA was concerned about the photo op.

Opponents of the new law say it discriminates against the LGBTQ community. About 200 people protested outside the building.
