Renowned Opera Singer Pleads Guilty in Houston Rape Case

(WBAP/KLIF) — An opera star pleads guilty to sexual assault in Texas.

57-year-old David Daniels was a well-revered opera singer who has appeared at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City and the Royal Opera in London. Daniels and his husband Scott Walters both pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a former Rice University student in Houston. The victim was an aspiring singer who had met Daniels at a reception following one of Daniels’ performances.

The 57-year-old and his husband were accused of drugging the student and raping him at their home. The assault occurred in 2010, but due to Texas having no statute of limitations on rape, the two were arrested in 2019. Daniels and Walters each pleaded guilty, Friday, to a second-degree felony charge of sexual assault of an adult. The pleas came as the trial of the pair on charges of first-degree felony aggravated sexual assault was about to begin.

The two will avoid jail time with an 8-year probation, but appear on the sexual offender database for the rest of their lives.
