Governor Abbott indicated that HB 1442 adds two new offenses to the organized criminal activity statute, while the second law is HB 2899, which allows police to impound street racer vehicles immediately. He says both laws will safeguard Texans from dangerous and illegal street racing and intersection takeovers, as Texas is a law & order state. The Governor says both bills give law enforcement agencies throughout Texas the tools to combat the illegal activities.

Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker echoed the sentiment as she recounted a young couple who lost their lives due to street racing. In addition, law enforcement also has the authority to go after those who upload the videos of illegal street racing to social media sites.
