Relying on Science to Beat the Record Heat

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Local athletic trainers on relying on a particular science to to help keep student athletes safe from excessive heat.

Before each outdoor football practice, athletic trainers in Dallas ISD are checking the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature. The WBGT is a measure of the heat stress in direct sunlight, considering things like temperature, humidity, and wind speed.

Hillcrest High School Football Coach Jacob Ramon said trainers use the method to determine the appropriate exposure to high temperatures.

“Our trainer makes the decision,” said Ramon. “Coach, you know what let’s try to beat the heat. Get them rested and then at 30 minutes let’s see if we can come back out. We want to try to beat that bulb to get a practice in.”

The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature needs to stay at 92.1 degrees or lower to hold a practice.

The DFW metroplex is experiencing record heat this week. According to the National Weather Service Fort Worth, at 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday, DFW Airport reached 107°F. This is the hottest temperature so far this year and ties the record high for August 1, set previously in 2011.
