Senator Cornyn Floats Federal Reimbursement for Texas Border Efforts

(WBAP/KLIF) — With the U.S. Border Patrol over-whelmed with processing illegal migrants, less resources are dedicated to preventing crime, drug smuggling, and human trafficking. That has forced border states and local communities to cover the costs of enforcement. Senator John Cornyn addressed the possibility of reimbursing states for border security efforts.

Cornyn is taking notice of the immense expense that Texas is spending to secure the border, something the congressman from Texas believes is the job of the federal government. Meanwhile, the Biden administration says its border policies are responsible for a reduction in the number of recent border crossings. Although the crisis at the border has seen a drop in the number of illegal crossings, it has not been enough to shed the term crisis. Cornyn believes the Biden Administration is playing a shell-game in reporting the number of migrants. The president announced earlier this year a plan to admit up to 360,000 people a year from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela, which Cornyn says have been removed from the overall migrant numbers.

The senator from Texas also indicates there have been 1.5 million “got-aways” since the president took office and an estimated 7-million illegal immigrants crossing the southern border since 2020. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas insists the border is secure.
