(WBAP/KLIF) — It’s not uncommon for air conditioning units to run 7-months a year or more in North Texas. A big chunk of your yearly electrical costs are generated from cooling your home. Summer time power bills are a rude awakening each year. In response, most power companies share tips with consumers on how to lower electric costs during the heat.

As the bulk of those bills deal with powering home air conditioning units, Daniel Puffe with Reliant Energy says one of the best ways to save is to make sure your AC units have been recently serviced. Another cost saving measure is to set your thermostat at 78 degrees when you’re home and four degrees higher when you leave home.
Using fans also increases savings as the wind chill makes it feel even cooler. Puffe also suggests running major appliances in the early morning or evening to prevent the a-c from working harder.
