SPCA Warns of Danger to Pets During Heat Wave

(WBAP/KLIF) — Not only are people in danger of death during extreme heat, our beloved pets are also at risk. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) is urging Texans to remember their pets during the heat wave.

The danger that extreme heat poses to pets can be fatal, if precautions aren’t taken. Maura Davies with the SPCA-Dallas says it’s critical to have an ample supply of water for animals, as well as a cool place to rest. If your pets are outdoors, Davies advises to look for the warning signs your dog is in trouble. Excessive panting, drooling, discolored tongue, or fatigue may be a sign your dog is experiencing a heat stroke. If that happens, get your animal out of the sun and pour cool water over their bodies. In extreme cases, an emergency visit to the veterinarian is required.
