(WBAP/KLIF) — An alarming trend is taking shape at area cooling centers operated by the Salvation Army of North Texas.

An increasing number of families are being pushed out of their homes due to increasing costs during the heat wave. Major Paul McFarland says the trend in concerning as a number of the Salvation Army cooling centers have exceeded capacity.
With increased utility costs from over-worked air condition units coupled with higher rent, many families are being forced out of their apartments. McFarland says they’ve had to rent as many as 50 hotel rooms per night because their facilities have run out of beds due to the influx of families. For those seeking refuge from the sweltering heat 16 Salvation Army cooling centers across the Metroplex.
They also have social workers on hand to assist residents in obtaining fan units, cases of water, or help with utility bills.
