PALO PINTO COUNTY (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Crews from multiple departments are making headway while battling a massive wildfire just west of Fort Worth near Possum Kingdom Lake in Palo Pinto county.
The “Storage Fire” is located between State Highway 16 and the popular lake destination. It’s burned about 551 acres and is about 40% contained.
The Texas A&M Forest Service’s Adam Turner detailed some of the tactics firefighters are using to extinguish the blaze.
“Crews are working to build dozer lines to go around it with engines. We’re going to continuing that work…working to mop up or put out any fire that we find in the first 100 feet inside that dozer line,” he said.
The current weather conditions aren’t making this fire fight easy, with temperatures and heat indexes hovering at or above 100 degrees.
Turner said crews have an uphill battle due to extremely temperatures as well as the heat and smoke from the flames.
“They may be only able to work for 20 to 30 minutes before they need to sit in a truck with some ac, have some cold water and cool off for another 30 minutes before they can keep actively working,” he said.
A full investigation into what sparked the fire is ongoing. Crews are also battling the 150-acre Rolling Pin Fire in Nolan County.
