MedStar Reports Dramatic Increase in Heat-Related Calls

(WBAP/KLIF) — As the heat wave continues across the Metroplex, medical professionals are strongly encouraging residents to hydrate, stay indoors if possible, and to be aware of how their body is reacting to the heat.

Medical clinics and hospitals are seeing a drastic increase in the number of patients affected by the heat. Matt Zavadsky says MedStar mobile medical units have taken more than 110 patients to the hospital since May 1st. With the heat index making temperatures feel between 105-110 degrees, dehydration can occur quickly. Experts warn that the temperature inside an enclosed vehicle can rise by twenty degrees in just 10 minutes.

Zavadsky, some people in the community cannot avoid being outdoors in the heat and should take preventative measures. One of the best ways to reduce your chance of heat-related illnesses is to ‘pre-hydrate’ by drinking several glasses of water within an hour of going outdoors. Those who are required to work in the heat to wear light-colored, loose-fit clothing and to take frequent breaks to drink water and cool off. In 2022, 279 Texans died of heat-related illnesses.
