ALLEN (WBAP/KLIF) – A lone cross remained outside the south entrance to Allen Premium Outlets on Tuesday after organizers and Allen firefighters removed a memorial that was set up after the May 6 shooting that left 8 people and a gunman dead.
Flowers, hand written notes, other gifts, and large crosses with the victims’ names written on them, were taken down. They were given to family members of the victims. But, one cross wouldn’t budge.
“I kind of laughed as a preacher’s kid,” said community organizer Cheryl Jackson. “I said there’s one cross that some people can’t take down. It’s kind of ironic that’s the one cross that’s standing because the man who helped build these crosses wanted the larger cross to be the cross that we were all covered underneath. That’s the cross they couldn’t remove by themselves. It’s going to take more men and more people to remove that one cross.”
Some residents said the cross is a symbol of resilience in a community working to heal.
