Allred touted his willingness to work across the isle with Republicans to help veterans; and a trade to with Mexico the bring more manufacturing jobs back to Texas.

He blasted Cruz’s actions before the US Capitol riot in 2021, saying that Cruz “cheered on a mob” and then hid in a closet in the Capitol building when it was under attack. In contrast, Allred spoke of his days as an NFL player and said that he thought that his days of putting people on the ground were over. He says that on January 6, 2021, he stood at the ready inside the Capitol to “take on anyone who came through the door.”

In reaction, the Cruz campaign said in a statement:

“Democrats have once again turned to a far-left radical to run for Senate. Not only does Colin Allred vote with Nancy Pelosi 100% of the time, but his voting record is completely out-of-touch with Texas.Allred wants men to compete in women’s sports, isn’t serious about addressing the crisis at the border, wants to take away law-abiding Texans’ guns, and is soft on punishing murderers.

Bottom line, Allred is too extreme for Texas. Thankfully, the Lone Star State has a tireless champion in Sen. Ted Cruz. For over a decade, Sen. Cruz has been leading the fight for jobs, freedom, and security in Texas. As Senator for Texas, Sen. Cruz will continue to do everything he can to bring more jobs to Texas, fight out-of-control government spending, and support the oil and gas industry from the attacks of Democrats like Joe Biden and Colin Allred.” – Cruz spokesperson Nick Maddux

Matthew Wilson (SMU)

Meantime, in analyzing the upcoming contest, SMU Political Science Professor Matthew Wilson said, “Certainly this is a race where Ted Cruz begins with an advantage, but Colin Allred is a credible challengers. He’s got a base in the Dallas Fort Worth area.”

Wilson added that as centrist Democrat, Allred will try to “thread the needle between his centrist position and appealing to the more centrist swing voters.” Wilson says the race will be expensive and that Allred will have to raise alot of money to be competitive against Cruz’s “ample war chest.”
