(WBAP/KLIF) — Tarrant County makes moves to back the blue. The Tarrant County Commissioners Court is aiming to protect its sheriff’s deputies engaged in shootouts with criminals. The county commissioners court approved the purchase of the department’s first armored vehicle.
According to Tarrant County Judge Tim O’Hare, the Bearcat will provide unprecedented protection for deputies. The $345-thousand vehicle produced by Lenco can carry up to 12 fully-equipped deputies. Commissioners approved the purchase by a 3-2 vote along party lines, with Democrats opposing. The Bearcat G3 will be used during hostage situations, stand-offs, and gun battles.
In addition, O’Hare says the county is also moving forward with the planning stage of constructing a new sheriff’s training facility which would include a new shooting range.
