DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – There are some new safety features along the historic Swiss Avenue neighborhood in East Dallas just in time for Halloween.
According to the Swiss Avenue Historic District, about ten thousand cyclists, runners, pedestrians and their dogs stroll through the mile-long street each week.
David Dean is the group’s chairman and said there have been too many accidents in the picturesque neighborhood.
“North Munger and Swiss is particularly problematic. A lot of accidents. A lot of speeding drivers…it’s at night. Some have been drinking a little bit perhaps and we have too many collisions,” he said.
To remedy the dangerous situation, the group worked with city council members Jesse Moreno and Paul Ridley, Director of Dallas Department of Transportation Gus Khankarli and Dallas District 14 Park Board Member Rudy Karimi to install what are called “rectangular rapid flashing beacons” or RRFBs.
“Those are pedestrian actuated where they push a button on a given intersection on Swiss Avenue and North Munger and the motorists are supposed to stop because there’s a pedestrian in the crosswalk. That’s the law in Texas,” he said.
Dean is encouraging pedestrians to use the RRFBs and for drivers to pay attention to them, to make sure everyone who lives and visits the neighborhood can make it home safely.
