ALLEN (WBAP/KLIF News ) – Parents in Allen ISD are sounding off over the district’s proposals to address overcrowding in some schools and dwindling enrollment in others.
District leaders are considering either repurposing or closing some campuses.
The situation sparked a protest outside the district’s school board meeting Monday night and some parents pleaded with the board directly.
“We’re asking you please don’t make our kids lose their school…right when they’re getting back to normal…right when things feel okay again,” said one parent.
In a letter sent to parents on Friday, the district outlined the potential proposals brought by a 70-member committee.
“Our schools in the west are reaching capacity limits, while our eastern schools are generally experiencing declining enrollments,” said the letter in part.
Allen ISD has more than 3,000 open elementary seats across the district and more than 75% of those lie within the eastern portion.
The district said the fact that there are 10 elementary schools to the east of Highway 75 and only 8 on the west side, yet the west side elementary enrollment is higher by 884 students, further compounds the issue.
Two public meetings are scheduled to address rezoning.
The first meeting is set for October 6 and the second is November 2.
The school board will take a final vote on the matter after the meetings.
