DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF News ) – The Our Calling homeless shelter in Dallas is creating a safe space for families experiencing homelessness.

It’s in response to recent data surrounding Dallas’ homeless population.

According the the shelter, there has been a 500% growth in the homeless community in the past six years.

“We saw five times as many families this year as we did last year. Families with kids, moms fleeing domestic violence, people living in their car, people living out under bridges, it’s startling and it should concern us all,” said Our Calling’s Pastor Wayne Walker.

He said the “Family Safe Place” will be a wing within the shelter equipped with armed security guards, escape routes, safe rooms as well as kid-friendly areas.

“A place where kids would come in and feel safe where we have snacks and toys and games and a place where we provide a moment of stability for these families as we work towards long-term solutions with our partners for them,” he said.

The shelter is currently fundraising for the space. It has even secured a $100,000 donation match for North Texas Giving Day, September 22.
