Denton, TX (WBAP/KLI) – An ongoing effort by cannabis advocates in Denton to get a permanent moratorium on arrests and citations has moved a step closer to reality as Denton City Council on Tuesday voted to place the issue on the November ballot.
The advocacy group in ‘Decriminalize Denton‘ spear-headed the effort earlier this year launching a petition driver targeting misdemeanor pot possession of 4 ounces or less.
The ordinance calls for several things. Among them according to Nick Stevens, board member with Decriminalize Denton. “If you have 4 ounces of marijuana or under – which is misdemeanor levels of pot – the police can no longer site your for possession or paraphernalia, they can’t charge you with anything; they can’t use the smell test to then search you.“
Listen:
Julie Oliver with Ground Game Texas which partnered with Decriminalize Denton on a petition drive says that polls have shown that 87% of Texans want some action on decriminalizing marijuana either medicinally or for recreational use. Oliver added that Denton residents must be a registered voter to vote on the ordinance. The last day to register to vote for the November 8th midterm in October 11, 2022.
Meantime, critics contend that decriminalization might be misread as an official sanction of marijuana use.
