Mayor Don McLaughlin says that Colonel Steven McCraw “has an agenda” and it’s not to present a full report on what happened at Robb Elementary School last month.
Uvalde, TX (WBAP/KLIF) – The mayor of Uvalde says, “The gloves are off” as he blasts the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety.
During the city’s council meeting last night Mayor Don McLaughlin says that Colonel Steven McCraw, during multiple briefings about the Uvalde school massacre has failed to comment on the number of his own DPS troopers who were on the scene at the time.
“He leaves out that during this time every other classroom in the building was safely evacuated by Uvalde Police officers with the assistance of border patrol. He leaves out that no other agency’s officers even asked to approach the door, much less did it without shields. Colonel McCraw has an agenda and it’s not to give a full report on what happened.”
Mclaughlin also repeated his claim that he had not been briefed on the tragic school massacre for weeks; and, said that claims coming from the DPS that the city had stopped cooperating with the investigation are and were false. McLaughlin said that he will not stay silent anymore as he had been asked to do amid the ongoing investigation.
On Tuesday during a Texas Senate Special Committee hearing on the matter, McCraw labeled the Uvalde shooting response an “abject failure,” and pointed the finger squarely at Uvalde ISD’s Police Chief Pete Arredondo.
Arredondo who is also a newly elected member of the Uvalde city council had requested a paid leave of absence from council which was unanimously denied last night. He was not present at the meeting and has been warned that he faces permanant removal if he misses more meetings.
WATCH: Full meeting which begins with public comment about Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo. Mayor McLaughlin’s comments about the DPS chief begin around the 1:20 mark.
